80sRockRadio.net

We bring you music from the best rock groups of the 80s.

The decade of the 80’s was full of awesome rock bands! From the new wave of British heavy metal, to the launching of MTV, and the Hollywood Sunset Strip music scene, the 80’s was a pioneer era for music. One of the most popular sub-genres of music to gain popularity in the 80s was Glam Rock. The 80s was a decade of decadence and living life to the extreme, big and loud! The glam rock, with extravagant spandex and wild mighty hair filled that need for the music that complimented the untamed 80s lifestyle. Glam Rock could be described as, happy Heavy Metal. Where metal makes you want to mosh or break things, Glam Rock makes you want to party and have a good time. The 80s was the golden age of Heavy Metal. Thrash Metal, Death Metal and Speed Metalmade an emergence in this decade. Some rock radio stations had shows on Friday or Sunday night that featured new bands like Metallica, Raven, Mercyful Fate, and Venom. Headbangers Ball premiered on MTV showcasing metal bands to a musically metal deprived audience, wanting more Heavy Metal!  Alternative Rock was a genre that was truly underground. MTV and your local radio stations was your only source for music. The whole world of music was condensed into a narrow scope. What came out of the other end of the Kaleidoscope was music that had been properly marketed, promoted by major record companies and filter by MTV and the British press. The powers that be decided what you listened to. Alternative Rock was something, very much on the down low. An informative record store or a friend sometimes told you when Love & Rockets, Echo & the Bunnymen or the Red Hot Chili Peppers was coming out with their new tape. The Cure, Depeche Mode and New Order (with the help of being on movie soundtracks,) made it into the mainstream and that was the start of when the underground turned into the conventional.

The 80s was an amazing time for music, especially for Rock & Roll and all the categories that went with it. This was the decade before we got saturated with the internet and the soon to come social media that killed human interaction. Going to the movies was a big deal, going to concerts was even bigger! People talked to each other, interacted and we listened to music together. I am glad I experienced my teenage years in the 80’s and got to discover the music when it was new. I remember hanging out at the lake with my friends and Keith, who was really into Thrash Metal, said, “hey check out this new band called, Metallica,” as he handed me the cassette. Taking my girlfriend to the Van Halen concert and afterwards spending time in the backseat of my Chevy Nova, listening to more Van Halen. Seeing Pantera at a small hole in the wall Heavy Metal club in West Fort Worth, in 1987. Those were some great times, and our music enhanced that experience. This free internet radio station is to commemorate those good times and to show our love for 80s Rock!
